Tests for Hemorrhoids

With any type of hemorrhoids, you will need to visit a doctor in order to get the problem examined.  It is easy for the hemorrhoids to become a more severe problem without proper treatment.  If you are having problems with hemorrhoids, make sure you get them diagnosed. The first type of test for hemorrhoids that is commonly used is an anoscope.  With this specific test, the doctor will use an anoscope to make sure that the problem is hemorrhoids.  An anoscope is a short hollow tube that is inserted into the anal canal.  This will have a light at the end of it, which will allow the doctor to see the blood vessels and if they are swollen or not.  With an anoscope, it will only need to be inserted two inches into the anus area. You do not need to fast before this procedure. 

The second test for hemorrhoids used is a proctoscopy.  This is very similar to the anoscope. A hollow tube will be inserted into the colon.  The light at the end, however, will be able to move up further into the rectum area.  This is a good option if you have internal hemorrhoids that are causing problems.  It will allow the physician to determine if the bleeding is from hemorrhoids or is related to other digestive problems. 

The third type of tests for hemorrhoids  is sigmoidoscopy.  With this specific type of test, there will a hollow tube that is also inserted into your rectal area.  This will have a light at the end of it.  A sigmoidoscopy will also be more flexible and allow the doctor to move further into the rectum area.  Through the sigmoidoscope, the doctor will not only be able to examine the rectum area, but can remove growth that is taking place in your digestive system that may be causing the hemorrhoids.  The main reason why a doctor would use a sigmoidoscope is to bend around the colon and see the edges that may have the hemorrhoids attached to them. 

With a sigmoidoscopy, you will need to make sure that your colon area is clear.  This will mean that you will need to clean out your system prior to the test using a laxative.  Doctors may also suggest for you to empty your colon with an enema, or sometimes both, depending on your needs.  This will help them in seeing what the problem is within the colon or rectal area.
